As we near December and the holiday season, it’s easy to focus on all of the holiday-related activities. You forget, sometimes, the price that bought that freedom, and how the greater Philadelphia area is home to so much rich national history.
One of the nearby sites to see in December is Valley Forge. Valley Forge stands as a testament to the sacrifice and the suffering of the soldiers during the American Revolution. There, General Washingon faced impossible odds to come out of that long hard winter victorious.
During December, you can visit Valley Forge for a March. The March is performed by volunteers who will travel up a path lit by lanters to the Muhlenberg’s Brigade. There are refreshment, plenty of people in period dress, and even shopping opportunities.
The rest of the park features several outbuildings, some of which are authentic, including Washington’s headquarters. There is a welcome center, as well, and plenty of interesting sites at Valley Forge.

If you want to see a one-of-a-kind spectacular Thanksgiving Day Parade, you don’t have to go to New York City. You can find one right here, in Philadelphia. The parade will take place on Thanksgiving day, November 27, 2008. It starts at 8:30 and ends at noon.
There are several wonderful places to view the parade. For example, you can watch the parade as it fininshes up at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In particular, the south side of the Eakins Oval, which is located right near the Museum of Art, is a great place. This is especially true if you’re bringing your family, as there is a tent sponsored by Campbell’s Soup that offers warm drinks, activities for children and hot food.
Another great spot to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade is at it’s starting point, at 20th and Market street. If you’re quick about it, you can cut across 20th street on foot to Parkway and see the parade go by again, as well.
This year’s festivities feature Kermit, Frosty and Hello Kitty balloons, as well as a Chronicles of Narnia float. Celebrities include Rachel Ray, Miss America and, of course, Santa Claus.

Philadelphia and sports go hand in hand.
It's only fitting that this year, for the first time ever, Philadelphia will be host to the first annual U.S. Sports Film Festival on October 23-26, 2008.
The Sports Film Festival highlights some of the best sports films ever, such as Invincible and The Natural. It also showcases some excellent lesser-known films, such as Kassim The Dream, which is the story of World Champion Boxer Kassim Ouma, and his struggle under the oppressive Ugandan army, and how he used boxing as his path to freedom.
Overall, there will be more than 25 sports-centric films. Every screening will have a Question and Answer session, or a panel, which features film stars, athletes, writers, and filmmakers.
In addition to the films themselves, the festival also will have several special events. There will be a sports memorabilia auction, a 5K run, and a "Sports Making a Difference" conference. In addition, the festival will honor Vince Papale, who was the inspiration for the film Invincible. Also honored this year is eight-time Emmy winner Bud Greenspan.
